In the papal document called Immensae Caritatis (1973), Pope Paul VI wrote “…from the very way in which the celebration (of the Mass) is organized, the Church should be seen to consist of different orders and ministries.” This tells us that we need to hear the voice of God calling us to serve in many different ways during the celebration of Mass.
We are in need of many to assist with the distribution of Holy Communion, both during Mass and in our parish ministry to the nursing homes and to the homebound.
Those who are gifted to speak publicly should consider becoming lectors.
Others should see themselves called to serve as Ushers, who are Ministers of Hospitality.
Children should consider serving at the altar.
Many of us might think that we have nothing to offer any of these ministries. However, each of us has some gift, some ability that could be put to the service of the community in the celebration of the Mass. The important thing to remember is that God does call each of us to some form of ministry, and God will give us all that we need to answer that call. All we need is a willing heart, and a love of God and our neighbor.
Please consider how God is calling you to one of these liturgical ministries.
