Kerygma is the name of the three day retreat for high school youth intended to reaffirm the core teachings of the Catholic Christian faith. The term "Kerygma" is a Greek word that refers to the content of the original preaching of the first apostles as they began to implement Jesus' command to preach the Gospel to all nations.
Thus the subtitle to the retreat name of Kerygma is "Core Christianity."
The Kerygma retreat is required of all high school students whose faith is being formed in the community of St. Cyril of Alexandria. It is structured so as to present the core aspects of the Catholic Christian faith in a peer community setting over the course of a three day experience.
Kerygma does not replace participation in ongoing faith formation. It is, as the name implies, an intense introduction to the Core of the Christian Faith that many of our young people have not received. It is, as it were, the foundation upon which the rest of their catechesis will stand.
It is our sincere hope that the intense experience of the Kerygma retreat will inspire young people to continue their faith formation with a renewed attitude and refreshed enthusiasm. The Kerygma retreat is presented three times a year. Once during spring break, during the summer and the fall. It is mainly intended for teens who are sophomores in high school and beyond.
